Store Bededag tørner Søllerød Gold Diggers og Copenhagen Towers sammen for første gange i årets NL-sæson. De to hold fra Nordsjælland har været blandt de bedste i National Ligaen de seneste år. Towers har været i semifinalen de to seneste år, mens Gold Diggers har været i finalen fire år i træk og vundet to Danmarks Mesterskaber.

Gold Diggers defense i aktion

Gold Diggers vs. Towers i 2011

By Tobias Rehling

After winning comfortably in Prague two weeks ago, the Gold Diggers needed just one more win, against the Giants of Wroclaw, to secure a place in the semi-finals of the 2012 EFAF Cup. One week earlier the Giants had lost a close game to the Black Hawks, hence the Danes entered the game as favourites, but they had never imagined that a win would come as easily as it did.

Daniel Pedersen scores a TD

The Gold Diggers offence took the field first, after the Wroclaw Giants deferred the option to receive to the second half. The first play of the game was an incomplete pass, but the offence shook it off and drove the ball down the field on an 11 play drive that was capped of by a 2 yard TD run by RB Daniel Pedersen. This drive was the beginning of an offensive eruption that lasted throughout the first half.

The defence was extremely stout in the first half, forcing numerous three and outs along with forcing four turnovers, one on downs and three interceptions. The first INT, by LB Kasper Dyhr Øelund, set up a two play TD drive that finished with two yard pass from QB Alexander Cimadon to WR Søren Bakbøl, the EP was missed. The TD made the score 20-0, as Cimadon had rushed for a TD on the previous drive.

#3 Øelund returns and interception

Following another defensive stop, the SGD offence scored again. This time a six play drive, featuring a play where Bakbøl caught a bubble screen and wriggled his way out of two tackles before being taken down after a 38 yard gain, culminated in another score, when Daniel Pedersen scored his second TD of the game on a 13 yard run.

On the very next play from scrimmage, CB Rasmus Graucob made an incredible interception, when he jumped over a pile of players and caught a tipped ball 20 centimetres above the ground. This play set up another TD, when RB/WR Alexander Simonsen ran the ball in from six yards. Following a successful EP the score was 34-0.

The Giants offence, led by former Hvidovre Stars QB Stan Bedwell, got going in the second quarter. Bedwell drove his team down the field, but the drive stopped suddenly when S Morten Hejndorf aka Speedy intercepted a third down pass. Speedy stiff-armed his way out of a tackle before returning the ball 70 yards for TD.

On the ensuing drive, Bedwell once again drove his team down the field. But this time the Giants managed to put some point on the board, when Bedwell found WR #25 in the back of the endzone. The score was 41-7 at that point.

#12 Cimadon on his way to a game ball

Just as the Giants got a glimmer of hope, the Gold Diggers offence put another nail in the coffin. On the second play of the drive Cimadon hit a double covered Alexander Simonsen down the seam, the Wroclaw defenders couldn’t bring him down and he walked into the endzone for a 45 yard TD. The half time score was 48-7 and the Gold Diggers was on their way to a comfortable win.

The second half turned into a battle for field position and never reached the level of offensive explosion of the first half. The Gold Diggers did put another 10 points on the board on a TD by WR Jonas Bo Hansen and a field goal 37 yard FG by K/WR Peter Fromberg.

The defence continued its stout play throughout the game snatching another two picks, one by Mikkel Lindsø and one by Rasmus Graucob, along with a fumble recovery by Morten Hejndorf and sacks by Robert Shapel, Stephan Nickelsen and Victor Greve.

The Polish are huge

Graucobs second INT of the day was the last play of the game, and the Gold Diggers could celebrate making a second consecutive trip to the EFAF Cup semi-finals. After the lopsided win I caught up with LB Mikkel Vangsgaard, who told me that the game had been a lot tougher than the score told, as the large physique of the Polish team had posted a challenge for undersized athletes on the Gold Diggers D. The game ball was awarded to QB Alexander Cimadon following a four TD performance, 3 passing and one rushing.

On Saturday April 7th the Gold Diggers opened the season against the Prague Black Hawks. At 1 pm the TEAM took the field, in Prague, for warm ups. The weather was not nearly as hospital, as the home team turned out to be, during warm ups the players were met by 5 degree weather and a freezing rain. But the weather shifted in time for kick-off and presented the two teams with fine football weather, except for quite slippery field due to the previous rain.

The Black Hawks had to earn their way to the Endzone

The Black Hawks had proclaimed that this would be an even matchup as long as the Gold Diggers were able to match their explosive air-raid offence, but the game would present a very different result.

The Czechs deferred after winning the coin-toss, so the Gold Diggers started with the ball. The offense took the field with a run-first mind-set, very atypical for the high octane spread system that the Gold Diggers usually applies, but this style emerged as the theme for the game. Led by the offensive line and returned RB Alexander Simonsen, after a stint at receiver, the Gold Diggers drove down the field, but was stopped around the 20 yard line and settled for three points.
The defence was extremely stout throughout the first half, only allowing the home team a handful of first downs and shutting down the run completely, while limiting Prague’s American QB to very few completions. After the two teams going three and out three times in total, the Diggers offence took the field again and after a drive consisting of six consecutive runs, K Peter Fromberg could another three points from a short range.
The defence another quick stop and after settling for field goals in the first quarter, the SGD offence were determined to ad seven points this time. The determination resulted in a nine-play drive, put together by five passes and four runs and capped of by a nine yard TD run by RB Daniel Pedersen.
After allowing the first 1st down of the game the defence stopped the Black Hawks after a big sack by LB Morten Frandsen on a crucial 3rd and four. On the ensuing drive the Gold Diggers offence drove the ball 59 yards for a third field goal by Peter Fromberg. The drive was highlighted, by a beautiful pass from, a scrambling, QB Alexander Cimadon down the seam to receiver Kasper Westergaard Sørensen.
The rest of the half developed into a battle of field position, but by the end of the half the Black Hawks were stopped on a fourth down. The Czechs tried to set up a screen, but when the RB cut inside LB Jimi Laursen shot through a wall of blockers and annihilated the running back. The Danish offence immediately took advantage of the big defensive play and scored on the first play of the drive, on a 43 yard pass from Cimadon to WR Søren Bakbøl. Following this the Gold Diggers went to the locker room with a comfortable 23-0 lead.

WR #21 Søren Bakbøl takes a pass in for a touchdown

On the opening KO of the 2nd half the Black Hawks attempted some trickery with one returner handing it of to the other an end around like motion, the exchange failed and the ball ended up on the ground. This mistake enabled DE Kent Bo Pedersen to make his second big special teams play of the game, the first was a tackle on kick-off where he hit the Czech American LB into the returner, thus tackling two in one hit, in the second instance Kent jumped on the fumbled hand-off, hence providing excellent field position for the offence. But the SGD offence didn’t managed to turn the great field position into points, as a six-play drive including an unsportsmanlike conduct ended in a fumble.

The Danish defence stepped up again stopping the Black Hawks following another important sack on a third down, this time by American DT Robert Shapel. On the following drive the Gold Diggers changed approach, passing on five of seven plays culminating with a TD catch by WR Christopher Aakjaer. This was Christopher’s first TD as a Gold Digger and he showed great relief after getting this monkey off his back. The score was now 30-0.
In the middle of the third quarter the Czechs finally got on the board, the TD was set up by a long 54 yard pass to WR #9 and was capped off with a TD run by American LB/RB/WR #30.
After the Black Hawks created a hint of excitement, the Gold Diggers offence answered right back killing any thought of a comeback. This was done through a nine-play drive that culminated in a 2 yard TD run by QB Alexander Cimadon.

On ensuing drive LB Morten Frandsen forced his second turnover by making a diving interception on a tipped pass.
After a short drive by the SGD offence the Black Hawks put together a 11 play drive, but on the cusp of the endzone the American QB #1 was picked off by CB Jonas Korsgaard Christiansen, as he tried to hit a receiver in the back of the endzone. The Danish offence followed the turnover up with an interception of their own and on the very next play the Black Hawks scored on a 39 yard pass to WR #9, the 2-point conversion failed.

The is the last play of the game, the offensive line was still at work

Following a long kick-return Søren Bakbøl scored his second TD of the game. Bakbøl took a short pass from QB Kenneth Stender 33 yards to the endzone, the extra point was blocked. The ensuing kick-off was fumbled and the Gold Diggers could run out the clock by running the ball twice. On the very last play rookie RB Rasmus Holmen Andersen took a zone play up the middle where he was met by a Czech LB, but Rasmus refused to go down and as he was pumping his legs the entire O-line came to his rescue, pushing the pile another 10 yards. This last play represents the TEAM effort, which is so important in the success of the Gold Diggers.

K Peter Fromberg was awarded the Game-ball after being perfect on 4 of 4 field goals and hitting 4 of 5 EP with one blocked due to a new holder and long-snapper.
The Gold Diggers take on the Wroclaw Giants on April 22nd at Rundforbi.

A victory in this game will send the TEAM to the semi-finals of the EFAF Cup for the second year in a row.

Although it’s Easter time, it feels like football season to me. We just opened the season with a huge win over the Prague Black Hawks, the defending Czech champions. It was a big game for us because not only was it our first game, but also it was also an EFAF game (European Federation of American Football) and a very, very long bus trip. In summary, there was loads of adversity. I thought we handled it quite nicely, defeating the Black Hawks 43-13, but more on that later.

I always wanted to be a part of a "jumping" picture....

I wanted to talk about the couple weeks leading up to the game. I started Danish lessons, finally! Though I’ve only been a few times because in Denmark they have a whole week of Easter break, weird…. I know. Anyways, I’m pretty excited because I’m really impressed with the pace that some of the advanced students are learning, and maybe I can get to some level of comprehension before I take off. Even if I do or don’t, class has been an awesome way for me to meet new people that I normally wouldn’t have on any other basis. I have people from all over the world in my class ranging from back to the US, England, France, Italy, and my partner is from Hungary! It also throws my schedule back on track, as it gives me a reason to wake up in the morning as opposed to 3 in the afternoon

We had a stretch of good weather here a while back, so I decided to stretch out my tourist legs and revisit a lot of the places that Sanne took me to on my first sightseeing tour of Copenhagen. I grabbed Sigga and went to various places such as the Queen’s residence, the Little Mermaid, and Nyhavn. I was actually amazed at how many little facts about the various statues I remembered (probably because how awesome Sanne’s tour was), and if you didn’t know any better, you would have thought that Sigga was the tourist and I was the one who has lived here all this time . We ended the day cooking dinner before I took off.

His hand was way too close to my face....

That weekend, I decided to have the defensive line over for dinner celebrating the end of the long pre-season. We actually ordered out ribs and wings from this carryout place called the BBQ Shack. The owner of the place was actually American, so the food tasted pretty familiar, unlike some foods over here that share the same name, but not the taste. It was really great having everyone over as we started off playing poker then a couple drinking games. The night eventually got pretty rowdy, as one of the guys ended up in the ER for a cut on his hand, I wont name any names…… Lindsø (My bad ). But besides that it was pretty smooth sailing.

Game week finally came around, and I was a little stressed from all of it. Attendance to practices and keeping guys healthy aren’t usually something a player has to worry about, but when you throw the coach into my job description, those things always stay in the back of your mind. We threw in an extra practice to make sure we were sharp, and I even threw in a volunteer practice…. a lot busier week than most. We just wanted to make sure we were as prepared as we could be. On Wednesday night, after practice Steglich and I met up with Mathias and Anton, from St. Patty’s Day, at an Irish pub called the Globe for a beer. We caught up on the last couple weeks and informed me that they were planning a trip to Paris to meet up with Cathe and Karla, so I’m checking my calendar in hopes to join them as they tour Paris. It was good to meet up with them, as it’s nice to talk about football with people who are fascinated by the sport but don’t play. It really puts it in perspective that I’m REALLY not back in the US.

The bus trip to Prague was different, as we took a big double decker bus on a ferry, across Germany and through some tiny streets in Prague. While in Germany, on the Autobahn, I expected to see lots of Porsches whizzing by with reckless abandon because of the lack of speed limit, but no…. way to disappoint, Germany . When we arrived at the hotel, I was glad to see that it was really nice. I’ve heard stories about away trips in hostels that are eight to a room and terrible food, but this was very similar to the road trip accommodations that I was used to while playing college ball. I ended up sharing a room with fellow DL, Johnnie, and a WR named Kasper. I spent the evening before the game having last minute meetings and a couple walk-throughs with both the DL and OL. A couple DL actually came and visited me on their own to get some last minute film time with me, I was really happy to see this as it really shows the level of dedication that people have on this team.

After the bus ride back to the hotel

Game day was there before we knew it, and I haven’t felt that level of excitement for a long, long time. I’ve done everything I could to make sure I, as well as my fellow DL was as mentally and physically ready as they could be. I was nervous up to the first defensive snap, but after the ice broke, it felt natural to be out there again. It was a blast finally putting on the same jersey as the rest of my teammates and hitting people besides other Diggers. The game went exactly how we hoped, as we played, I thought, really well in every aspect. There is definitely stuff to improve on, but there always will be, and it felt really good to get this first win under our belt.

Triple Hi-5!

The night out was just so much sweeter with a victory. We walked downtown 25 deep, and although my body felt like a truck just hit me, I felt like I was on top of the world. We ended up in this HUGE dance club with 5 levels, every level being a different genre on music. It wasn’t like anything I’ve seen before, but it had to be the coolest dance club I’ve ever been to. We ended up bouncing back and forth the oldies and R&B levels and even managed to get a crowd surfing pit going. The taxi ride home, however, was the most memorable experience, as I could have sworn that the lady driver was not sober. At one point I looked over and she wasn’t looking at the road, but at me, then laughed when she saw the fear in my eyes as we were gunning it through the tiny streets in Prague, weaving through cars and people alike. After she dropped us off and was paid, she actually backed into a brick wall on her way out of the parking lot. Lucky for us, it was after we got out of the taxi, I suppose. The trip concluded with the long, long bus ride home.

Next weekend, we start the U19 season with a trip to Kolding to face a team called the Guardians and also start the National League schedule against a team that just bumped up to the national league, the Hurricanes. I’m excited to see how the U19 does as well as having our first home game on the senior team. Like I said before, it’s really starting to feel like football season.

P.S. In completely unrelated news….. finally ditched the old nokia phone and got my iPhone game up, it was only a matter of time. DOGS
